Francis H. Qualey, 85, died Feb. 28, 2000, in Bangor.
He was born here, a son of Andrew and Elizabeth Rush Qualey.
Mr. Qualey worked in the potato industry. He was a past member of the Maine Potato Council, a charter member of the Agricultural Bargaining Council and participated on the Agway Committee. He also was on the board of directors of Farm Family Life Insurance.
He was a communicant of St. Benedict's Church, where he was a past member of the parish council. He was a member and past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus, and was a founder of the St. Benedict's Cemetery Committee. He served many years as a selectman and later as a school board member in Benedicta.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Margaret Brown Qualey of Benedicta; two sons, Peter of Sherman Mills and Andrew of Benedicta; three daughters, Mary Jalbert of Danvers, Mass., and Therese and Catherine Qualey, both of South Portland; three brothers, Arthur and Robert, both of Sherman Mills, and George of Benedicta; a sister, Margaret McAvoy of Benedicta; and 10 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday. Friar Fred Irving will be celebrant and Friar Frank Murray will be concelebrant. Burial will be in the spring in St. Benedict's Cemetery.

Rita Lucille Qualey PORTLAND -- Rita Lucille Qualey died Sept. 21, 2009, at Mercy Hospital with her family by her side. She was born in Benedicta on May 18, 1918, to parents Lewis and Flora MacDonald Qualey. She had six sisters and two brothers. She was educated in Benedicta schools, graduating from St. Benedicts High School in 1935. She received her nurses training at Madigan Memorial Hospital in Houlton with affiliation in New York, Rhode Island and Portland. She practiced nursing in Bangor, California, Florida and Portland. She worked for War Foods Administration briefly during World War II. She retired from Mercy Hospital in 1983 after over 30 years as head nurse. She was devoted to her patients and sought opportunities to update her skills. Rita was an active member of St. Patrick's Parish and its Women's Council. She served for many years as extraordinary minister of the Eucharist and visitor to the sick at a local nursing home. She was a member of the Madigan Memorial Hospital Alumni Association and was an honorary member of the Mercy Alumni Association. She was a past member of the American Nurses Association. Rita remained close to her family and was warmly welcomed into their homes. She enjoyed watching the children grow. She lived for many years with her sister Christina and her family. She made a home for her father after her mother's death. She moved to 75 State Street in 2002. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling to Europe, Ireland, Canada, Mexico and throughout the United States. She frequently visited and traveled with her sister Bernadette. She was predeceased by her sisters Marion Savard, Gertrude Conant, Teresa Hansen, Sr. Mary Luanus, RSM (Agnes) and brother Louis. She is survived by her brother Albert and wife Rowena of Benedicta, sister Christina Heskett of Portland and sister Bernadette Hunt of Auburn, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. Prayers will be recited on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home; followed by an 11 a.m. concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick's Church, 1342 Congress St., Portland.  Benedicta, January 26 - Mrs. Mary Ellen McAvoy, 42, died Tuesday At a Island Falls hospital after a brief illness. She was born August 19, 1912, daughter of Albert Jay and Elizabeth (Gormley) Qualey. Mrs. McAvoy is survived by her husband, Everett; four sons, Albert of Norfork Virginia, Everett Junior Michael and Martin all of Benedicta; four daughters Mrs. in Cunningham, Ms. Mary Ellen McAvoy, Ms. Louise and Mrs. Esther Agnes McAvoy, all of Benedicta; three sisters, Mrs. Austin Gilbert of New Canaan, Connecticut, Mrs. Elizabeth Cignatta of Baltimore, Maryland, and sister Mary Agnes of St. Joseph's convent of Portland; one brother, Joseph Qualey of New Canaan Connecticut; many nieces and nephews. Remains are at the residence where friends may call until time of funeral. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at nine o'clock in St. Benedict Catholic Church with the Rev. Leo White, pastor, officiating burial will be in St. Benedict Cemetery in the spring.

 Harrison - Martha E Willey, 55, died Monday a Lewiston nursing home after a long illness.  She was born in Casco, a daughter of Martin and Persis Nutting Qualey, attended schools in Harrison and Bridgton, and graduated from Bridgton High School in 1956. Mrs. Willey had been employed by Francine Shoe Co. in Norway.  Her husband, Stanley E Wiley Sr., died in 1977.  Surviving are a son, Stanley E. Wiley Jr., a daughter, Terri L Wiley, both of Harrison; two brothers, Reginald Qualey of Lymington and Joseph Qualey of Naples; three sisters, Sarah Gilkey and Mabel Heino, both of Harrison, and Theresa Heino of Waterford. A graveside service will be held at 1 PM Thursday and Oakdale Cemetery, Otisfield.  Arrangements are by Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, Bridgton.

 NEW VIRGINIA, IOWA - Jean Meinders passed away in the company of her family Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at the age of 62.
 Jean dedicated her life to service as a mother, Army Reservist, and a Registered Nurse. She was constantly caring for other people and bettering herself. She was the Manager at Unity Point Eye Laser Surgery Center.
 Jean is survived by her husband, Rob; sons, Jason and Erin; Erin's wife, Samantha Meinders; grandchildren, Dylan and Noah Meinders; and sisters, Rose Rush, Celeste Pare, and Beth Young. She was predeceased by her parents, Herbert and Veronica Qualey; and brother, Charles Qualey.
 A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Benedicta, with Father Joel Cyr celebrant. Interment will be in the St. Benedict's Cemetery. Arrangements by Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls.

Harold Qualey, 76, of 15 Rising Road, husband of Elizabeth Rush Qualey, died Monday in Norwalk Hospital.  Born on Oct. 31, 1914 in Benedicta, ME Mr. Qualey was the son of the late Andrew and Elizabeth Rush Qualey.  Mr. Qualey was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Army Signal Corps and was a retired foreman for Southern New England Telephone Co. In addition to his wife, Mr. Qualey is survived by a son, Robert Qualey of Ridgefield; two daughters, Diane Qualey of Bridgeport and Barbara Dorenzo of Upton, Mass.; five brothers, Arthur Qualey, Frank Qualey, George Qualey, Robert Qualey, and Gilbert Qualey, all of Maine; four sisters, Hazel Qualey of Stamford, and Nora Schaffer, Margaret MacAvoy and Catherine St. John, all of Maine; two grandchildren.  Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Matthew's Church on Scribner Avenue.  Interment will follow in St. John Cemetery on Richards Avenue.  Friends may call from 2 to 4  and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Franklin Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main St., New Canaan

 GILBERT JOHN QUALEY ROCKY HILL, CONN. and BENEDICTA -- Gilbert John Qualey, 74, died Feb. 20, 1993, at a Rocky Hill, Conn. nursing home. He was born Feb. 28, 1919 , in Benedicta, the son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Rush) Qualey. He was a resident of Old Saybrook for 34 years and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by four sister, Hazel Qualey of Stamford, Conn., Nora Schafer of New Britain, Conn., Catherine St. Peter of Millinocket and Margaret McAvoy of Benedicta; four brothers, Francis and George, both of Benedicta, Arthur and Robert, both of Sherman Mills; many nieces, nephews and cousins; Friends may call at the Bowers Funeral Home, Sherman, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Benedicta with the Rev. Richard McLaughlin officiating. Spring burial will be in St. Benedict's Cemetery, Benedicta.
